Yesterday, work was canceled for me. While this would
normally be welcomed on ANY Monday, it was a bit nerve wrecking hoping the
hurricane wouldn’t affect us! Luckily, the wind and rain weren’t too bad and
Tampa is safe and sound!
In talking with one of my non-coastal friends, I mentioned
the hurricane parties we have hear in Florida when a storm is about to
hit! She was VERY confused as to why we
would not prepare for the natural disaster and, as I laughed, explained to her
that was the exact point!
A hurricane party is where everyone gathers at the safest
house, bringing their hurricane items and perishable foods, in order to ride
out the storm. Because riding out a storm can take it while, it’s also
important to bring some entertainment...both digital and non digital! I
definitely recommend DVDs , video games, and CDs while the power is working and
board games for when the power is out!
Lastly, it can be fun eating all of the perishable foods
first! It’s a great change to eat frozen foods like ice cream and not feel too
guilty about it!
Here are some of my “must haves” at any hurricane party:
To ride out the weather this weekend, I had some fun making
drinks and baking a cake! I finally tried the White Peach Sangria recipe I
talked about a few posts back! It was very sweet but also very light…an easy
drink, for sure! While enjoying my sangria and watching mean girls, I also used
the time as an excuse to bake! I love baking and decided to make a vanilla cake
with mini chocolate chips in the batter. I also made a chocolate filling for
the middle of the two layers. Lastly, I made some cream cheese icing and used
red food color to create some colors to decorate the top! The design was
totally inspired by my new Lilly planner.
A little amateur, but overall, a ton of fun to make!
What do you do occupy time during bad weather? Have you ever
had a hurricane party?

I’ve been lusting after a monogram bracelet for
a while and this one with pearls might be inching its way to the top of my
list!
That cake is too cute! I love the sound of hurricane parties, minus the scary bits, but keep praying all the while for you all. Hopefully I will be healed in a month and on my way to spend the remainder of the summer/fall/winter in Naples with my sweet Grammy but sort of praying we don't have to have any of these sort of parties, hah!

ReplyDeletei was telling my boyfriend about the hurricane parties we'd have and he thought it was the craziest thing haha. love your essentials and your cake looks gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI love how the drink that doesn't need ice was wine! If I was at a hurricane party, an alcoholic beverage would DEFINITELY be a necessity - I'd be freaking out just a little! I also love how it's an excuse to eat ice cream... I'll take any excuse to eat ice cream!! ;)
ReplyDeleteOne of the best things about hurricane parties is the food and drink! Wine and ice cream? It really is a win!
DeleteThat cake is so stinkin cute! It looks like a professional did it! And haha your hurricane party sounds like so much fun, minus the actual hurricane!
ReplyDeleteWhat an adorable cake!! I'm your newest follower by the way :)
