Saw It. Pinned It. Did It. TWICE!

In case you didn't guess by the title, this is a two-for-one post today! Can I get a woop woop?!

My first SPD was the Kiss Pies recipe!

I ran into issues right away with this one. When I went to the grocery store to get the ingredients, they only had regular kisses, not the mint ones (and the recipe had my heart set on mint!)!!  So, I decided to buy the dove chocolate mints and experiment that way.

I followed the directions from the pin, which were VERY simple! To make the circles, I used the opening of a cup like a cookie cutter.

I did change up the egg whites for a mixture of half butter half water that worked just as well.  I also used Truvia instead of sugar. I ended up liking this because Truvia is very coarse.

I baked at 350 degrees for 24 minutes.

Let them cool...

...and enjoy!

The Verdict: I'd give them a 7.5. The warm ones (when the chocolate was still melted) were much better and I think the cookie could have used more sugar. I think I will put the sugar coating on the pie crust BEFORE making the wonton shapes next time to spread the sugar out more evenly.

My second pin/ SPD was inspired by J's Everyday Fashion!

I decided to mostly copy the middle look, but opted for cowboy boots instead of ankle booties, since I've worn my ankle booties twice this week, already.

{Sorry for the TERRIBLE lighting! This photo was snapped at 6:30 AM so we just used the overhead lighting in the foyer.}

Have you tried any pinterest projects recently?

Hurricane Party

Yesterday, work was canceled for me. While this would normally be welcomed on ANY Monday, it was a bit nerve wrecking hoping the hurricane wouldn’t affect us! Luckily, the wind and rain weren’t too bad and Tampa is safe and sound!

In talking with one of my non-coastal friends, I mentioned the hurricane parties we have hear in Florida when a storm is about to hit!  She was VERY confused as to why we would not prepare for the natural disaster and, as I laughed, explained to her that was the exact point!

A hurricane party is where everyone gathers at the safest house, bringing their hurricane items and perishable foods, in order to ride out the storm. Because riding out a storm can take it while, it’s also important to bring some entertainment...both digital and non digital! I definitely recommend DVDs , video games, and CDs while the power is working and board games for when the power is out!

Lastly, it can be fun eating all of the perishable foods first! It’s a great change to eat frozen foods like ice cream and not feel too guilty about it!

Here are some of my “must haves” at any hurricane party:

To ride out the weather this weekend, I had some fun making drinks and baking a cake! I finally tried the White Peach Sangria recipe I talked about a few posts back! It was very sweet but also very light…an easy drink, for sure! While enjoying my sangria and watching mean girls, I also used the time as an excuse to bake! I love baking and decided to make a vanilla cake with mini chocolate chips in the batter. I also made a chocolate filling for the middle of the two layers. Lastly, I made some cream cheese icing and used red food color to create some colors to decorate the top! The design was totally inspired by my new Lilly planner.

A little amateur, but overall, a ton of fun to make!

What do you do occupy time during bad weather? Have you ever had a hurricane party?

Today’s Pickins:
1.       This pin shows you the right colors to matchyour toes to your nails without actually using the same color polish.
2.       Twelve Saturdays is the perfect site for your gameday dress purchases! I am in love with so many of their designs!
3.       I’ve been lusting after a monogram bracelet for a while and this one with pearls might be inching its way to the top of my list!

Time Flies, So Slowly

I’m having a moment where I remember how fast time really flies. I’m sure we can all agree, when we were younger, we use to wish time away. We’d wish for school to be over for summer to come, or our birthdays to get here, or even for the semester to end so that we did not have to go to a class anymore.
It’s crazy to think it has been three years since I started at the University of Florida and joined the most amazing sisterhood on the planet. It has been so hard watching the rest of PC09 go back to school and not being there to join them. Yet, at the time, I loved college but was ready to “grow up”.  I miss my sisters more than anything and wish I could go back just for one last year. But that’s the funny thing about it, we wish time away because of all the bad we see, not even looking at the fun times that are flying past us! It’s only been three months and my memories of class are already wiped from my collegiate memory vault.
Even this past week flew by! It feels like it’s only been on a few hours since I was sitting on the tarmac, delayed FOR HOURS, waiting to fly to North Carolina. I counted down the days, for months, waiting for the trip. The last week before the trip seemed to take the longest; yet, this week post trip has gone by in the blink of an eye.
While this post may seem a bit sad, both of these distances in my life will be gone two weeks from today!! So here I go, wishing time away…again.

Today’s Pickins:
1.       I am a total ring person, so it didn’t take much for me to fall in love with these State Love Rings!
2.       Maker’s Mark cookies!? I know a guy that might just love theses…
3.       Coral and Lavender color schemes are inspiring my current nail polish plans!
4.       I think it’s a good thing that Lilly Pulitzer is only offering the Panhel table cloths in the original four chapters. Otherwise, I might be tempted to buy!

My thoughts on Gary Chapman's The Five Love Languages: Singles Edition

I just finished reading The Five Love Languages: Singles Edition by Gary Chapman and can honestly say I have never been so moved by a book in my life.
I am so genuinely grateful that Erin, my GBig, shared this book with me. I have already applied some of the principles in my life and can see the benefits.
For a bit of background, the book is not a self-help guide. It is, in fact, a book written by a Christian relationship counselor from North Carolina. The book does have quite a few biblical references, which I genuinely enjoyed, in the readings. The purpose of the book is to teach you how to give and recieve love most effectively in your life!
The thing I “got” the most out of this book is that the five love languages do work for EVERYONE in your life—your boyfriend, siblings, parents, co-workers, neighbors, etc.

So what are the love languages?
The first language is Words of Affirmation, which includes worlds of praise, words of kindness and words of encouragement. In my observations, this is a very common love language and even if it is not our primary love language, it is one that most of us understand well. I’ve been using words of affirmation in showing love to my mom. Words of Affirmation are definitely her primary love language so little texts or encouragements and an extra “thanks, mom” here and there is already going a long way. It makes me feel good to see her happy to know she is loved.
The second love language is Gifts. Before reading this book, I would have said this is the language I speak least, however, I now know I was receiving the wrong types of gifts. When someone speaks the love language of gifts, the gifts are meaningful because of the love shown through them. In the past, I have only ever received gifts because 1) it was a customary situation like a birthday or 2) because my boyfriend screwed up. Neither of these situations made me feel loved in the way the book intends, especially the latter. When I sat and thought about it, I realized my parents have shown me great love through gifts, especially in the last few years. First and foremost would be college. Even with all of my scholarships, I can only imagine what a financial burden college Is on parents. I am so grateful for that gift and their love and support throughout really were shown financially.
The third love language is acts of service. While this language is very straight forward, it is also difficult for some to speak. Unless you are my sister. Mel shows love through doing things to help others, to make their lives easier. Things like mopping the floor while our mom is at the grocery store, even if she doesn’t ask. Or even offering to do the dishes because she knows that the person whose turn it is has a busy night. In thinking about this, I have tried to show Mel more love through doing acts of service for her, something that isn’t quite as natural for me. I can already see the appreciation from her and she seems genuinely excited to have me help her move back to school this weekend!
The fourth love language is Quality Time, which is my primary language. This language includes both quality listening as well as quality activities.  I have always loved in depth conversations and really getting to know the core of someone and I think this is why. Talking for hours about things truly makes me happy. I also LOVE going on adventures and trying new things.  The biggest caution to this language, however, is that “listening” aspect—that is simply being physically engaged someone doesn’t fill their love thank, we need that quality interaction.
The last language is physical touch. I think women are more in tune to being “touchy feely” but this language can also be a hard language to speak, for some. Touch includes everything from a pat on the back, to a hug, to a kiss, and even sex—it is the closeness and comfort we feel when we are physically embraced by others. I think we all can remember a time when we’ve really just needed a hug  but often we are a bit greedy about giving those hugs. While I’ve never been a touchy person myself, I have already embraced the warmth shared when I simply hug someone, or pay them on the back, or place a hand on their arm. This is the language I am definitely learning more and more about but can already see the benefits.
The second half of the books discusses how we discover our own love languages, how we discover love languages in others and how we can apply these to all types of relationships in life. Gary gives plenty of examples that he has encountered in his years and wells as though provoking questions, which are great for putting this all in to perspective.
This book is amazing and I would highly recommend that everyone reads it.  Everyone can gain something from this work and that is what I love most about it. Be forewarned, though. It’s tough to put the book down once you have started it!
